KALA

E. Kala is a German-Greek artist working in painting and mixed media. Inspired by the sea and the horizon, her work explores stillness, presence, and the emotional resonance of space. Through layering, reduction, and an intuitive process of revision, she creates paintings that balance movement and calm while inviting viewers to slow down and engage with what is left unsaid. Working with acrylics, oil, cold wax, and mixed media, she is particularly interested in the dialogue between material exploration and visual simplicity. e.kala lives and works between Germany and Greece.

Trauerbrandung – Grief Tide

The German title Trauerbrandung can be translated loosely as grief tide or grief surf. Grief is not a singular event, but a recurring movement. Like waves, it retreats and returns, sometimes gently, sometimes with unexpected force.

In this painting, the sea becomes both a physical and emotional landscape. The horizon suggests distance and orientation, while the layered surface reflects the complexity beneath what appears calm. The work is not about a specific loss, but about navigating uncertainty, change, and the forces that continue to shape us beneath the surface.

This idea lies at the heart of my contribution to Artists in Chaos. Chaos is often understood as noise, disruption, or disorder. Yet some forms of chaos are quieter. They emerge in moments of transition, uncertainty, and transformation, when familiar structures dissolve and new ones have not yet taken shape.

In Trauerbrandung, the horizon becomes a point of orientation within that uncertainty. It does not offer certainty or resolution, but it provides direction. The painting reflects my interest in the possibility of finding stillness without denying complexity, and of remaining present even while the waves continue to move.
